Bagel Articles

Both are about the same man (although one article does not mention that he sells donuts as well as bagels) and both are written by the same author. But the similarities mostly stop there.  In the excerpt from "Freakonimics" the focus seems to be much more story based tracking the mans career from being laid off to owning a new bagel business.  In that article the focus seems to be much more on the social experiment of owning a business that is run off the honor system at a place of work with presumably all middle to upper middle class employees. The second article "Economist Sell Bagels"  the focus is much more data based and is of the theme of the economic aspect of owning such a business rather than the social aspect.  The second article also has a much more focused intro and conclusion.  While the other mostly just follows along chronologically.  The two both have mention of each other the Freakonomics article talks about data and the Bagel article discusses the social aspect as well, but there is a clear difference from their format all the way through that the information being conveyed is very different for both pieces.

Major Writing 2 Plan

Idea 1: To examine what the most successful way to market to college freshmen.  I will conduct it by asking those in my class and in my residence hall.  The questions I will ask will be; when was the last time you bought a product after seeing the advertisement?  On what media did you see the ad?  Was the product low cost (under 20) medium cost (20-100) or high cost (over 100)? By conducting this I will study the effectiveness of advertisement on college freshman by where they see it and by what it motivates them to purchase.

Idea 2: Poll asking students new to Iowa City what there favorite local bar, restaurant, or desert place.
Question will include; what about the managing of the local business keeps you coming back? What about the marketing attracted you to the business?  What about the business location, atmosphere separates it from other business like it. The purpose of this is to examine how the local food places appeal to college students in a predominately college town and gain college student's business.

IMRaD

The IMRAD report is much different than the APA and MLA formats that I have used in the past.  The IMRAD report is successful in conveying a lot of information effectively and efficiently. The format consists of an abstract, an introduction, followed by the central point of the paper the main message that is being conveyed, ending with a conclusion.  The main difference from the IMRAD from the other formats that I have used is that the author does not to get to voice his/her own voice rather just convey the point.  While the author is still technically writing all of the words their is no room and no need for the author's views on the report and the content.

Speech Outline

Speech Outline
Intro
·         Think about the phone that you have right now.  Think about what phone that your friends have.  Why did you choose that phone?
·         Apple is a computer company that has set itself apart from all other computer companies through the marketing of their products and through the design of their products.
·         In my speech I will talk about Apple’s appeal to audience pathos through the design of their products, Apple’s credibility in the consumer market, and Apple’s company
Body
o   Apple’s appeal to audience pathos through design of their products.
                    i.            Apple makes beautiful products and present them as something beautiful that the consumer can own and use every day.
ii.            Many apple print and TV ads give no information on the product simply show the new model and trust the consumer to know that the product is reliable and perform slightly better than the last model.
iii.             (Show MacBook Air ad) Examine lack of text. Lack of information on product.  Point out that the ad does not show Apple’s logo, but the company is known by the design of the computer.
o   Apple’s establishment of credibility in the consumer market.
                    i.            Show TED Talk How Leaders Lead (3:20-4:30)
ii.            Go off the speech of the TED Talk.  Comment this is the way that Apple sets themselves apart from all other computer companies by having a credibility of greatness.
iii.            Point out that there are practically no ads in which a celebrity endorses Apple instead Apple’s number one celebrity endorsement is Steve Jobs. Since people believed in Steve Jobs as a visionary they believed in and bought his products.
o   Apple has established a mythos by engraining itself in the culture.
                    i.            Through Apple’s success it has become a household name in not only the computer market, but cell phone market.  It is practically the only name in the music player and tablet market.
ii.            Talk about those that have a problem with Apple how their products are made.
iii.            Look at Apple’s response and disclosure with how products are made in factories in eastern Asia, China.
iv.            Back up with evidence from http://www.cnbc.com/id/44795739
Conclusion
§  By examining Apple’s unique ethos, pathos, and mythos in the marketplace we can tell much about the company.
§  Apple is a computer company set apart by all other computer companies by the fact that the market believes in their products.

§  All the information that I’ve shared with you about this company don’t take my word for it, but next time you’re waiting for class to start and someone takes their phone out of their pocket notice what the brand is.

Speech Outline (1st outline re posted)

The Company I chose for my presentation is Apple Computers.  I chose Apple because I feel that there is a lot to say about their advertising and why people can’t seem to stop buying their products.  I am not a person that knows or cares much about computers, yet so much of my entertainment comes from Apple.  I am typing this on my MacBook Pro laptop.  My phone is an iPhone 5.  At home my family has an Apple TV in the living room.
The main ads by Apple that I am looking to analyze are their print ads.  Looking at their reliance on credibility (ethos) and the excitement meant to be had by looking at one of their slim, attractive products (pathos.) I will also be looking at Apple stores the exterior paired with the interior and how they are not designed to look like all other stores and to look somewhat futuristic.  The outside source I am using is paired with my visual aid.  I will be using a one minute excerpt from a TED talk in which the speaker talking about “how leaders lead” summarizes Apple’s marketing and how it is able to be so effective.

My tentative thesis for the product is that Apple markets their products on being reliable, efficient products that are attractive to own.  When a reader is looking through a magazine and sees a print ad for the new iPhone they see a white screen showing usually not even the whole phone against a white background.  The ad says nothing about the phone only the name and that it is by Apple.  The viewer that sees that knows that the products that apple makes are reliable and by seeing the phone photographed attractively they know that the phone is good to look at and that they want to own something that attractive.

Major Speech 1 Advertisement

The purpose of the advertisement is to show the beauty of the product.  The laptop in the ad is very slim and the ad is trying to show that.  The purpose of the ad is to show the audience "The world's thinnest notebook (laptop) and show the audience a good looking product that will make them want to purchase it. The ethos of the ad is in the fact that no where on the ad is there an apple logo or is there anything that says "Apple."  The company has so much credibility that the viewer of the ad is supposed to know that the computer is by Apple simply by looking at the ad and at the computer. The ad gives no information on the computer it assumes that the audience knows the quality standard of Apple computers and knows that the computer will function as well as all other apple computers.  The font is very unassuming it is not in your face it appears just to by normal typing font with the name of the product, MacBook Air, bolded. The Pathos of the ad is showing the laptop on top of the yellow envelope.  Setting the laptop on top of that has an impact on the audience in that everyone has scene an exact envelope and is familiar with that size and gives perspective of how small the computer is to the audience.  The ad also looks good, it is simple the all colors go together the black font, grey computer and small yellow envelope.
