First Assignment

The purpose of the first assignment of the class will be to inform on the subject of business.  The information conveyed in the essay will differ depending on who is interviewed. Currently, I am planning on interviewing a small business owner from my home town. In the interview I will ask questions about the basics of running a small business and starting a business from the ground up. The audience of the essay will be my fellow students.  The audience's knowledge of the topic will be similar to my knowledge so the business vocabulary will be fairly basic.  The media used for the assignment will be paper typed in APA style.

In high school I wrote a persuasive essay on the importance of stricter gun laws to improve national safety.  I knew that my essay's audience would be other students my age and my writing teacher.  To promote my point I first addressed the opposition's idea and then disproved their idea with facts from credible sources.  In my essay I wrote, "The NRA has spent millions advocating for more guns in public places in the United States. Although the United States has more gun violence each year than any other first world country, and also the highest percentage of gun owners than any other first world country (Washington Post)." In this case I could have improved on my essay by giving a more in depth look at the oppositions point of view and how it relates to the high gun violence in the US. In another section of my essay to prove my point I examined and disproved beliefs that the audience may have.  Such as, having a gun in the home is safer than being "unprotected" and having no firearm in the home. From my essay, "Many americans think it safer to have a gun in the home, while, the opposite is actually true.  A study by the American Journal of Epidemiology shows that the gun violence such as murder and suicide are three times higher in gun owning homes." In this case I was trying to challenge the readers beliefs and make them question their thoughts and what they may have been told in the past. I believe I was successful in addressing their beliefs head on and giving factual evidence that what they believe is not true.
